A Love Song for Bobby Long divx
So much for testing the waters. The Pistons signed Jason Maxiell to a four year contract extension which will cost the team $20 million. Maxiell had his breakout season last year and while it seems like Maxiell is a late bloomer, this is definitely a guy who can contribute. And at $5 million per year, I have a feeling this signing is going to look like a bargain two years from now, especially is Maxiell is a bonafide starter.
He got off to a nice start in the Pistons opener. He scored seven, hit all three of his free throws, had four rebounds (three on the offensive glass) and blocked a shot in eighteen minutes of play.
The Pistons kicked some you know what last night as they helped head coach Michael Curry pick up his first NBA win. The home team outscored the Indiana Pacers in every quarter except the fourth and some of their team numbers were particularly impressive. I have fond memories of the Chuck Daly Pistons and one of his tenants was that if you were picking up 20 assists, that more times then not, you were going to win. This game was a case in a point with the Pistons having 23 assists (versus just 14 turnovers). I can live with that ratio.
Tayshaun Prince led the way with nineteen points and while the team leader in rebounds (Rasheed Wallace) had just seven boards, seven different Pistons had at least four boards. Throw in the fact that fourteen of the 41 rebounds were on the offensive glass and you come up with yet another reason why the Pistons got it done last night.
Rodney Stuckey had a nice night off the bench and he scored eight, had three rebounds and pitched in with four assists. Walter Herrmann joined Chancey Billups, Rip Hamilton and Prince as players who put up double figures in points during the game.
Next up are the Washington Wizards on Saturday. They dropped their season opener to the New Jersey Nets last night.
Last year, my attempts at keeping up here at Pistonsblog fell pretty flat. Now it’s time for a fresh start, with some new features so be especially sure to check back next week because I’m going to take you back in time to when the Pistons ruled the earth.
