Basketball Prospectus recently unveiled their Eastern Conference Preview
and while the column is heavy on Celtics, they pick the Pistons to be the top team in the conference. It’s nice that the Pistons are getting some respect because a lot of the other “experts” don’t have the Pistons at the top of their lists.
The Pistons also finished up their fifteen man roster when they waived forward Sammy Mejia. The forward was the Pistons second round pick last year.
The Pistons opener is tomorrow. Eight o’clock against the Heat.
Talk about a kick in the you know what. Rodney Stuckey broke his hand fighting through a pick in the Piston’s final exhibition game and he’s going to be out for six weeks. So the young potential star’s real debut will be pushed back into some time in December. This also thins out things at the guard spot and you hope one of the other youngsters will make a big enough impact to where the loss of Stuckey will be just a blip on the radar.
Lucky Numbers buy The Pistons finished 4-4 in the preseason and that means just about nothing. Thursday the games mean something and the Pistons start on the road against the Heat.
You can’t take too much stock in these first preseason games, but the Pistons dismantled the Heat Monday night. First round draft pick Rodney Stuckey led the way with fifteen points while he was one of six Pistons to reach double figures. He shot a nice five for seven and he was also five of six from the line. Jason Maxiell had a nice game as well with eleven points and he had a team high ten rebounds.
I’m not sure what happened to Rasheed Wallace but he disappeared. He shot just four times in 20 minutes and he finished with three points but he had a nice time on the glass with nine rebounds. Richard Hamilton and Ronald Murray had a team high five assists in the game.
The Pistons have their second game tomorrow against Cleveland. I’ve got the Tivo set to tape it so even if I miss it, I’ll be able to do a better recap the following day after watching it fully.
ESPN Insider John Hollinger has posted his projections for how he thinks the season is going to play out and he’s not very kind to the Pistons. He has the Bulls with the best record in the conference with the Cavs coming in second. The Pistons are way down in fifth place with a 48-34 record. Let’s just say, a fifth seed isn’t what Pistons are used to but this is a team that could go either way. If Rasheed Wallace gets his stuff together, you could be looking at a team that should top that projection. If a few things could go wrong, you could see a slide.
The last time the Pistons didn’t win 50 was way back in 2000-2001. My bet is, they out place that projection and finish with around 53 wins.
The Detroit Pistons announced today that they picked up the option on power forward Jason Maxiell contract for the 2008-2009 Season.

I think that this is a great move by Joe D. Maxiell is the type of player that will add a spark coming off of the bench. Last year he averaged 14.1 minutes in 67 games. Look for that number to go up as he plays an increased role.
The Uninvited full Chris Webber recently turned down a deal to play in Greece 13 Going on 30 film and he’s said that the only team he sees himself playing for are the Pistons. Of course he hedged everything by saying he was also still exploring his options. Webber would be a good guy to have coming off the bench and he’d provide a solid option for the Pistons with their question marks at power forward. It looks like the Magic, who actually drafted Webber way back when but traded him on draft day, are a team that will probably show some interest the Detroit area native.
